Grand Opening of ‘The Sheakley’ Will Further UC Athletics
|
The newest addition to the ever-changing “UC skyline” has its roots in the distant past and its sights set on an exciting future. A June 11 ribbon-cutting marked the official opening of UC Athletics’ Sheakley Indoor Practice Facility and Sheakley Athletics Performance Center in Varsity Village. With a striking façade that gives off definite “Next” vibes and an ingenious design that leverages every inch of space, The Sheakley, as it is informally known, immediately resets the standard for such facilities across the country. Check out this video tour.
Larry and Rhonda Sheakley’s vision and generosity were the primary drivers of the project, which reflects our long and proud history of intercollegiate athletics success and underscores our institutional commitment to excellence. It also gives a nod to the family dynamic embedded in our cherished sports tradition: Larry’s passion for UC athletics arose as Raymond Sheakley, Bus ’49, brought his young son to campus to cheer on the Bearcats in Nippert Stadium and the Armory Fieldhouse. As a proud Cincinnatian who appreciates the symbiotic relationship between the university and the community, Larry channeled his enthusiasm into support for his beloved hometown teams.
Home to the UC football program, The Sheakley also serves baseball, lacrosse and soccer while meeting the nutritional needs of all 450+ student-athletes. It’s where the Bearcats will be trained and nourished, become stronger and faster, maximize their potential, and build lifelong relationships. Just as important, on the heels of our joining the Big 12 Conference, The Sheakley is the latest evidence that UC is positioned for success at the highest level in athletics.
