GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH, HOLISTIC PATIENT CARE UNITE IN NEW BLOOD CANCER HEALING CENTER
|
UC’s focus on innovation permeates every aspect of the institution’s work, and the newest example represents a huge step forward for one of medicine's most challenging ongoing struggles. Last week, the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center opened its Blood Cancer Healing Center within the medical campus. With more than 1.6 million people in the U.S. directly affected by blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, this revolutionary research, treatment and wellness facility will redefine standards around blood cancer care while providing comprehensive patient support and breakthrough treatments under one roof.
Embodying a whole-person approach to healing, the center was created largely through the visionary leadership of John Byrd, MD, a Cancer Center physician-researcher and one of the world’s premier figures in the blood cancer field. “Research advancements for many forms of blood cancer are giving new life to patients,” Dr. Byrd said. “You can now survive years past a blood cancer diagnosis, managing it as a chronic illness. The Blood Cancer Healing Center supports this new life for patients by bringing all the needed supportive services and pioneering research together to deliver personalized care in one therapeutic environment.” The center will also foster enhanced collaboration between researchers and industry partners.
UC has been heralding the university’s “Next Lives Here” strategic direction since it was introduced six years ago by President Neville Pinto, and the Blood Cancer Healing Center is the latest shining example of Next Lives Here in action. Our university continues to differentiate itself in higher education by both recognizing where the world is going and generating the means to get there in transformational ways. As alumni who cherish UC’s proud history, we also have much to anticipate around our exciting future as the Bearcat family continues to elevate our society and improve the human condition every way we can.
