UC GAINS NATIONAL ACCLAIM FOR ‘UNICORNS’ IN BUSINESS COMMUNITY
|
Are we Bearcats or Unicorns? Considering the innovative spirit and entrepreneurial output among our alumni, the answer seems clear: We’re both.
In modern business terms, “unicorn” refers to companies that aren’t publicly traded and have a valuation of more than $1 billion. There are over 1,300 such companies in the world — generally startups created by people with an uncommon degree of ingenuity and determination, and who excel at identifying and meeting emerging market needs. And disproportionately, they are us. A new study indicates that founders of startups in the U.S. who studied and/or worked at the University of Cincinnati are 3.3 times more likely to see their companies achieve unicorn status than the average entrepreneur does. That national-best figure far exceeds other universities, including Harvard, Yale, MIT, Stanford, Vanderbilt and Cal Berkeley.
These findings likely came as a surprise to many observers, but it’s not an accident or an anomaly. It’s earned and it’s intentional. It’s what UC’s institutional culture and our 1819 Innovation Agenda are all about. And while the study focused on a certain kind of startup that has fully bloomed, our track record isn’t limited to the study’s parameters. We're proud of these “unicorns” and the countless examples of alumni success in all walks of life — like those we honored at last month’s UC Alumni Celebration. There’s more coming, too. As noted below, another 7,400 Bearcats just graduated and are heading out to make their own mark.
Our alumni truly are the proof behind UC’s institutional promise of next. As they boldly define their impact on an ever-changing world, they are the living embodiment of Next Lives Here.
