President’s Legacy Keeps Giving 50 Years On

WARREN BENNIS LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE ELEVATING NEW GENERATIONS OF BEARCATS
|
When a university appoints a new leader, time will judge the selection by its lasting effect. Will the new president’s impact be deeply and meaningfully felt? Will the university’s DNA be altered for the better? By those standards, UC certainly gets an “A” for naming Warren Bennis its 22nd president in 1971, and more than a half century later, we can clearly see it was an inspired hire that keeps on giving. During his six years here, Bennis shepherded UC from a municipal university to full state affiliation, strikingly recalibrating its trajectory and paving the way for the leading urban university we know today.
Yet Bennis was also on his way to devoting the rest of his life to the study and cultivation of leadership. After leaving UC in 1977, he came to be known as the “Father of Leadership” for his intensive, lifelong work in this vital field that is so central to organizational, professional and personal development. UC continues to add to Bennis’ legacy through the Warren Bennis Leadership Institute (WBLI), housed within the Lindner College of Business. WBLI provides a variety of interdisciplinary coursework, workshops and mentorship opportunities for students across campus to facilitate and accelerate their understanding and use of leadership practices.
WBLI initiatives comprise a variety of experiential opportunities, from signature educational and training programs to research projects designed to examine the fabric of leadership, create new avenues for budding leaders, eradicate barriers where they may exist, and empower the next generation. There are faculty fellows in five different UC colleges, but importantly, it’s not just a resource for academia; WBLI’s real-world, roll-up-your-sleeves applications have been inspiring and supporting students, alumni and business leaders for six years through the annual Warren Bennis Leadership Experience. This year’s edition on April 8 kicks off Alumni Week.
UC’s primary purpose is to produce alumni who are prepared to realize their potential and make their personal mark on the world. Our ongoing institutional tribute to Warren Bennis is a growing means of doing just that.
